Supporting change of CEO at Knowle West Media Centre

Working as an Associate with PG Collective and in collaboration with Julia Beart & Kate Smith, we have recently delivered the first phase of work to support the outgoing Founder and CEO Carolyn who retired at the end of March, and co-creating with the team an achievable plan for the incoming leadership team to transition safely and sustainably.

I’d had the privilege of training up the whole team a couple of years ago in consent based decision making in conjunction with Practical Governance and already knew the skill, dedication and care that the Knowle West team brings with them in everything they do, so to get a chance to support them further in the transition was really exciting.

The initial phase was an essential one – listening to the staff at Knowle West – where were the opportunities, the challenges, the risks in moving to a different structure? How had consent been used and received so far in the organisation? What kinds of skills and experience did we need to build on?

It was a quick and intensive phase, with a clear deadline of the end of Feb to come to the board with proposals for how to transition. Kate, Julia and I led the board through a session where they were introduced to consent, and successfully managed to agree 4 proposals to move the plan forward.

The outcome, is that recruitment for the Co-Directors will begin immediately and a sustained commitment to investing in leadership skills and experience was also a key agreement.

We are really excited to see how the plan develops and hope to work with the developing team over the next few months to see it come to fruition.
